Starousedlíků, jejichž rodiny tu žijí po celé generace. Vyprávějí si své legendy, chovají se podle zavedených pravidel a nemají rádi nikoho, kdo přichází odjinud. S tím se musí vyrovnat i Diane Fryová, konstábl policie oddělení, která na nové místo nastupuje nejen uprostřed žhavého léta, ale také na počátku vyšetřování smrti mladičké Laury Vernonové.     Odlehlá oblast Peak District je světem dávných povídaček a tajuplných názvů. Černou a Bílou horu tu doplňují Čarodějnice, Obři a řada dalších podivných přírodních útvarů. Stojí tu i Devět panen – řetězec skal obklopený temnou legendou. Blíží se zima a do kruhu přibývá panna desátá. Je totiž objeveno tělo neznámé ženy, jíž kdosi nastavil ruce a nohy tak, jako by tančila. Seržantka Diane Fryová a její zasmušilý partner Ben Cooper, kterého místní lidé přímo zbožňují, dostávají za úkol vyřešit vraždu, k níž ovšem nemohou nalézt jediný motiv.     Do Peak Districtu dorazila zima. A Marie Tennentová se rozhodla spáchat dost nepravděpodobnou sebevraždu. Stulila se do sněhu v horách a dlouze čekala, až zmrzne. Seržantka Diane Fryová se snaží vyšetřovat vraždu, ale zjišťuje, že je to ještě obtížnější než jindy. Sníh a mráz brání polovině Oddělení E vůbec dorazit do práce, její partner, konstábl Ben Cooper, je zaměstnán prošetřováním válečné záhady staré přes padesát let. A Fryová má dojem, že Benův zájem o případ je jenom ztrátou policejního času. Ale když o pomoc žádá mladá Kanaďanka, Cooper dámě v nesnázích samozřejmě na pomoc běžet musí. Jenomže v Peak Districtu se v lednu objevilo mrtvých těl více. Například i neznámého, dobře oblečeného muže pohozeného u kraje neprůjezdného průsmyku. Vedle něj sice ležela i cestovní brašna, avšak prázdná. Doklady u sebe neměl, proto mu na Oddělení E začali říkat Sněhulák. A než se nadáli, měli na výběr hned dva mladé muže, kteří by oním Sněhulákem mohli být.     Slepá hrozba není vždy jen to, co nevidíme. Může to být i něco, co vidět nechceme nebo nedokážeme. Jak dobře ví i Diane Fryová, která někdy odmítá vidět i to, co má přímo před očima. A jak ví i Ben Cooper, který se sice už dokázal aspoň částečně odtrhnout od rodinné historie, ale vzápětí ho čeká případ, který dokáže vyřešit jen tehdy, když pochopí historii jiné rodiny. Blíží se květen a pod Černou horou leží vesnice Withens. Není to žádná poklidná víska, ale místo vandalismu, zlodějství a podivných zmizení. A nyní i vraždy.
